Submental fullness may sound relatively complex, but this term is simply the medical descriptor for a double-chin. Like various parts of the face, the area just beneath the chin gains some of its contouring with fat pads. With age, weight, hormonal fluctuations, and natural genetic makeup, these pockets of fatty tissue may become more prominent than we’d like them to be. Excessive submental fullness makes the chin appear fat even when it’s not. Historically, we have dealt with this issue using appropriate liposuction technique. Now, we can do so with an innovative injectable called Kybella.
If you are unhappy with the appearance of a double-chin, schedule a consultation with Dr. Raymond Douglas to find out if you are a candidate for Kybella. As one of the newest and most exciting non-surgical treatments on the market, Kybella can get rid of that stubborn fat under your chin that diet and exercise can’t so you can be you again!

How does Kybella work?

Kybella dissolves fat cells by introducing a synthetic form of stomach acid into the target area. This acid, deoxycholic acid, is a type of salt that exists in human bile. The purpose of the acid is to break up dietary fat. In clinical studies, researchers confirmed that the introduction of deoxycholic acid into an accumulation of fat cells caused the lining of these cells to dissolve. Without proper membrane lining, fat cells literally spill their contents. The body’s immune cells then naturally eliminate them.
This process of fat destruction is one at which the body is very adept. It is important to approach treatment knowing that processing fatty content takes time. Patients should expect initial swelling after treatment that relates to the insertion of the liquid deoxycholic acid into the space around fat cells. Swelling decreases as the product gets absorbed. Also during the initial recovery after injectable treatment, patients should expect tenderness in the area beneath the chin. These side effects are tolerable and temporary.

Who is a candidate for Kybella?

Most healthy adults who are interested in improving the contours of the jawline and chin area are good candidates for Kybella. Injectables are generally suitable for all skin types and tones. Commitment to the recommended series of treatments is necessary in order to achieve the desired outcome. Patients should be in good general health; free of active infection. Kybella is not approved for women who are pregnant or nursing.
Realistic expectations are crucial to satisfying results from Kybella treatment. We conduct a thorough examination and consultation in which we discuss concerns and the desired outcome with each patient. Our examination observes the amount of fat reduction needed to improve contours. We also evaluate tissue laxity and look for signs of scarring that may limit the results we can achieve.

How long does Kybella last?

Kybella destroys a particular number of fat cells and eliminates the lipids that were contained in the dismantled cells. The destroyed fat will not return, which allows a patient to expect permanent results. However, it is important to understand that, should weigh gain occur, there is no predicting where on the body fat cells will expand. If a person gains weight after Kybella treatment, there is the potential for submental fullness to increase to some degree.
