This week, Dr. Raymond Douglas, answers the question “Why Do I Have Dark Circles Under My Eyes?”
Patients frequently ask Dr. Douglas why they have dark circles under their eyes and how to get rid of them. In this video he discusses what causes dark circles and various treatment options.
Why Do Some People Have Dark Circles?
There are many reasons why people might have dark circles under their eyes. For example, some people have allergies or autoimmune diseases that creates a blue tinge under their eyes that require individualized medical solutions.
However, there are patients who have dark circles under their eyes that are unchanging and worsen with age. Many of these patients have prominent eyes which tends to push out the fat that surrounds the eye creating bulges and bags in the lower eyelids. This occurs in an area with very thin skin; therefore, allergies or similar conditions will cause this area to thicken or retain fluid making the under eye hollows darker.
Another reason individuals experience dark circles under their eyes is due to having small cheekbones. Individuals can be born with small cheekbones or it can occur with age. The cheek deflates with age because individuals lose fat which exposes the lower eyelid hollows.
What Can You Do?
Dr. Douglas can help patients with severe or moderate prominent eyes by surgically moving the eyes back or taking fat out from behind the eyes. The other option is to take the fat that is herniating forward and roll it over on to the cheek. This does not take away the darkness of the skin but it takes away the shadowing and gives a youthful appearance.
Other procedures done in the office are fillers and fat injections. This is targeted to reinflate the tissues or fat compartments that have deflated with age. Fillers have to be placed in the right location to really make a difference. Dr. Douglas uses fillers that have a low rate of reaction, blue tinge, edema and fluid formation. He also places them with a cannula so that there is minimal bruising after the procedure. Aside from fillers, fat injections in combination with other procedures, such as a cheek lift or a fat transposition of the lower eyelid, will give a much more youthful appearance to the cheek.
These are some examples of what you can do surgically and nonsurgically to improve the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.
