- Posted on: Apr 10 2019
In this week’s episode of Thyroid Thursday, Dr. Raymond Douglas shares his 4 thyroid health diet tips. In today’s world with so many conflicting dietary ideologies and options, it can be hard to know what to eat! Fast food is faster than ever thanks to all of the new food delivery apps, and dieting can seem daunting. That is why Dr. Douglas is sharing his diet tips to optimize your thyroid health.
Thyroid Health Diet Tip #1: 80/20 Rule
With the 80/20 or 90/10 rule, you can essentially eat healthy, nutritious foods the vast majority of the time, but still enjoy some foods that may not exactly be the best for you, in moderation. Focus on eating really well and healthy 80 to 90 percent of the time, and then 10 to 20 percent of the time, you can treat yourself. This makes it so that the majority of the time, gratuitous eating is eliminated. Ensuring that most of your meals are healthy and correctly portioned will eventually feel so normal you won’t have to think about it.
Thyroid Health Diet Tip #2: Avoiding Foods That Cause Inflammation
Dr. Douglas highly recommends eliminating foods that cause inflammation. While we will get into more detail on specifics foods in later blog posts, there are a few key foods to cut out: dairy, complex carbohydrates, and red meat.
Thyroid Health Diet Tip #3: Eliminating Dairy and Red Meat
Dr. Douglas is a big fan of a low or no animal protein diet, aside from fish. Many patients who have autoimmune issues discover that this works really well for them. A diet without dairy and red meat promotes longevity, and can actually reverse the aging process.
Dairy is something that most adults actually have some level of intolerance to. It also causes a lot of inflammation and causes you to accumulate fat, especially around the mid-section. As for red meat, it is extremely difficult to digest. You want to consume foods that work with your body, not against it.
Thyroid Health Diet Tip #4: Eliminating Whole Grains (Lectins) and Refined Sugars
To allow your body to work optimally, Dr. Douglas also suggests eliminating whole grains (lectins) and refined sugars. Whole grains (lectins) act similarly to invading organisms and spark the immune system to get revved up, increasing its potential to attack itself. Refined sugars turn into unwanted fat, and cause major up-and-down energy spikes, which can be harmful.
In just a week or two of eliminating the above foods, while maintaining an 80/20 or 90/10 rule, most of Dr. Douglas’ patients have felt a huge difference. It just takes one small step at a time to make great differences.
