Reshaping the Face with Buccal Fat Pad Removal
- Posted on: Nov 15 2018
In many cases, the extent of care for patients with Graves’ eye disease focuses only on ocular symptoms. As a world-renowned specialist in treating thyroid eye disease, Dr. Raymond Douglas understands that the eyes may just be the starting point of concern. In our Beverly Hills office, we appreciate the need for full facial symmetry and recognize the natural expansion of facial fat that may coincide with Graves’ disease. This enables us to help patients reshape their face with appropriate techniques, such as buccal fat pad removal.
Facial Fat: A Balancing Act
The youthful face has fat in all the right places. The structure of fat pads in the face defines the cheekbones and enhancing tapering of the lower face. For many people with Graves’ disease, fat pads seem to be displaced. They may have more fatty deposits on the lower cheek than across the apple, leading to a chubby “chipmunk” appearance. One solution that works for many of our patients is to remove the fat pads that are causing this concern.
What is Buccal Fat Pad Removal?
This cosmetic procedure targets the buccal fat pad on each cheek. Buccal fat pads are encapsulated masses of fatty tissue that lie between the nostrils and the corners of the mouth. These fat masses are situated deep beneath the skin. Usually, by the time we reach adulthood, they have decreased in size and prominence. When the fat pads continue to create fullness beneath the cheekbones, they can be removed in a minor surgical procedure.
Buccal fat pad removal is so straightforward that the procedure is often performed with only local anesthesia and mild sedation. Surgery is performed through small incisions, one on each side of the inside of the mouth. These incisions provide access to the lower cheek without the risk of visible scarring. The fat pad across the cheek spans upward toward the temples. Using precision technique, Dr. Douglas removes only relevant buccal fat in small portions until the desired amount of fat has been removed.
Are You a Candidate for Buccal Fat Pad Removal?
Dr. Douglas performs buccal fat pad removal in his Beverly Hills and Shanghai offices. Surgery is considered after a thorough consultation and examination. Good candidates for this procedure are in good general health and do not smoke. They also have characteristics such as:
- A square or overly round face shape and puffy cheeks
- Lack of definition in the mid-face
- A desire for more prominent cheekbones and facial tapering
