Angelica’s Thyroid Eye Disease Journey
- Posted on: May 30 2019
Angelica was diagnosed with Graves’ disease at a young age. She did everything right, got the treatment she needed, and felt great. She had radioactive iodine to control her thyroid, and her symptoms seemed to vanish. But as the years went on, a new issue arose: her appearance began to change. Slowly her right eye became more and more noticeably different. It seemed to bulge out. At first, it was subtle, and Angelica, age 20 at the time, had no interest in medical intervention. Her life and health were both going well. However, the longer she let it go, the worse it got.
“I can’t hide it anymore. I can’t take pictures anymore. I don’t like the way it looks. I was only 20 or 21, I was trying to live a normal life, you know? Doctors appointments were the last thing I wanted to go to, especially because my eye wasn’t that bad yet. I got away with it for a long time and then by the time I realized it was more noticeable I kept thinking, I can’t hide it anymore. I can’t take a picture anymore. I don’t like the way it looks.” -Angelica
Despite Angelica’s rapidly worsening eye condition, she luckily did not have the other symptoms that patients of Dr. Douglas often approach him with. She wasn’t having any pain, no double vision, and no dry eye. The toll that the disease was taking on her was largely psychological.
Dr. Douglas explained to Angelica how lowering the eyelid by just one millimeter would make a drastic difference in restoring her appearance. Coupled with an orbital decompression, Angelica’s procedure was finished before she knew it. Relatively painless, she had a quick recovery. Thanks to her procedure, she was finally ready to live a normal life again, with renewed confidence and total happiness with her regained appearance.
