Getting The Orbital Decompression Results You Deserve
- Posted on: Jan 9 2019
In this week’s episode of Thyroid Thursday, oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Raymond Douglas addresses the question “I’ve Already Had An Orbital Decompression – Can Something More Be Done?” The answer is “yes,” you can get better orbital decompression results. It’s time for you to be you again!
What is an Orbital Surgeon?
As an orbital surgeon, Dr. Douglas spends most of his time operating behind the eye, through very small incisions. Mastering this takes extra and specialized training. When it comes to customized orbital decompressions, Dr. Douglas performs a couple hundred of these procedures a year.
How To Get The Best Orbital Decompression Results
So many patients have come to us because they’ve had orbital decompression surgery in the past, and were not happy with their results. Rarely, if ever, has there been a patient that we couldn’t get nearly perfect results for.
We commonly get a lot of patients in who have had orbital decompression surgery for thyroid eye disease, or just for prominent eyes, and they don’t like the way they look. One thing to remember is that there is a lot of flexibility when it comes to the orbit. We can shave down a little bit of bone, or remove a little bit of fat to get you to where you want to be.
Orbital Decompression Main Priority
The vast majority of our patients with thyroid eye disease can get back to the way they looked before. We take time with our patients prior to surgery to go through old photos, old videos, and make a customized plan with them. This is possible for approximately 90% of patients.

Orbital Decompression Secondary Priority
In the other 10% of patients, if we can’t get you exactly to how you looked prior to thyroid eye disease, we can make significant improvements so that you are extremely happy with your post-surgery appearance.
No Double Vision. Outpatient Procedure.
We go through great lengths to reduce the risk of double vision. Our rates of double vision are half, even 1/3 of what anyone else reports in the country. We typically do orbital decompression as an outpatient procedure as often as possible, so you can be on the road to recovery as quickly as possible.
The effects of Thyroid Eye Disease can be devastating to your everyday life. Extreme dry eye can ruin your sleep, and create issues with vision and wearing contacts. Your eyes can appear to bulge, and your confidence can be shattered, as you no longer look like you. But with the expertise of Dr. Douglas, you can be you again.
Be You Again
We feel as though it is possible for about 90% of patients with Thyroid Eye Disease to get back to the way they looked before with their orbital decompression results. That is why we work so hard for you, and why our motto is “Be You Again!”
