Botox Might have a Secret Superpower

Most of the adults in the Los Angeles area have heard of Botox. This product was the first injectable to garner worldwide recognition for its proven anti-aging capabilities. Since its inception, Botox has given adults of all ages plenty of reason to appreciate it. Treatment is simple and convenient. There is no downtime, and results can last an average of 3 to 6 months. Due to its high safety record, Botox can be repeated as needed to soften dynamic wrinkles. Could there possibly be more to love about this therapeutic cosmetic drug? According to recent research, there may.

Wrinkle-Reduction and Elasticity-Boosting-in-One

Anytime a product has a dual function it tends to be perceived as having more value. In a study conducted by Canadian researchers doctors James Bonaparte and David Ellis, Botox was put to the test on this possibility. The doctors’ study observed the effects that Botox treatment may have on the skin’s general elasticity.

Elasticity is one of the traits of youthful skin. It indicates how well the skin “bounces back” after being stretched. The chemical elastin is what provides this characteristic to the skin and, as we age, we produce less of it. Drs. Bonaparte and Ellis enlisted the participation of 43 Botox newbies to measure elasticity before and after treatment.

To observe changes, the doctors used an instrument called a Cutometer to measure skin retraction after stretching. Measurements were taken before Botox treatment as well as several times during the months after injections were administered. Their findings confirmed that elasticity improved as much as 30%  after treatment. Furthermore, the improvements gained through Botox treatments lasted up to 4 months in some participants. The study was published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.

Significant Science?

Does this study indicate that Botox indeed does have a secret superpower? Maybe. We already know that Botox holds the power to rejuvenate the face by temporarily paralyzing certain muscles. What study authors suggest is that Botox treatment may effectively postpone the onset of new wrinkles by also allowing the skin to stretch and retract more efficiently.

There are several reasons for the popularity of Botox. Discover how this treatment can refresh your appearance by scheduling a consultation in our Beverly Hills office.
